May Newsletter 2020

Hello from Asmus Farm Cottage

It’s May already! We hope you are all keeping safe and well, whatever your situation at the present time. As I write this I am sat in the sunshine with this wonderful view (minus the unfortunate eyesore which is the quarry!) We are so lucky to live here. The pigs have been happily sunbathing this week and cuddling up with one another! Martin has been giving them haylage to munch on now that they have eaten through all the fresh grass and they are very happy pigs!

What’s new on the farm?

This week we welcomed Babs to the farm from Martin’s breeder friend in Yorkshire. She is a pure Gloucester Old Spot gilt all ready to start breeding with Hugo. We needed to introduce a new bloodline of female as we only have two boars and we won’t interbreed our pigs!! She is a fine looking girl and we hope she will prove to be a good mummy.

Spring Chickens

100 day old chicks were delivered this week ready to go outside and free range in a few week’s time to grow on for meat, so watch this space for those…

Home Life

We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place with safe outside space for the children, especially at the moment. Life for us here hasn’t been too much different really, apart from the shop being closed and having a house full of children and teenagers to home-school and feed CONSTANTLY! Luckily we will never run out of food and we have had some lovely BBQs with our produce over the past few weeks. Martin has also been busy planting the polytunnel so we will have lots of lovely fresh veg to see us through this isolation period! The lettuce has already sprouted and is so delicious. It’s “The Good Life” up here at the moment!

Butchery

We really miss seeing you all at the shop but we are happy that we can continue to butcher for you. As most of you are probably aware we are offering a set £25 meat pack for local delivery each week, delivered on a Thursday. This changes weekly so we will let you know what is in each week’s pack the weekend before delivery. We are also continuing to supply the Village Store in Harwood and Milk Maids in Over Hulton with our sausages each week, so if you don’t want a whole meat pack then you can always grab a pack of sausages from there.

This week’s meat pack for local delivery on Thursday, 14th May will include:

500g Traditional Sausage

500g Bank Top Beer Bangers

4 Pork Burgers

500g Pork Mince

250g Unsmoked Back Bacon

6 Free Range Eggs – may be a mixture of duck and hen or substituted if we have a lot of orders.

If you would like a meat pack delivery then please send your name, address and a contact number to contact@asmusfarmcottage.co.uk

That’s all for now folks! Stay safe and well.

Martin & Jane x
